Family Mediation
Family mediation gives separating spouses, partners, or parents a structured way to discuss issues and work toward agreement. It can help reduce conflict, preserve communication, and give families more control over the outcome than a contested court process.
Devgun Family Law provides family mediation services in Edmonton for appropriate family law matters. Mediation may assist with parenting arrangements, child support, spousal support, property issues, and separation terms.
What Mediation Does
A mediator is neutral. The mediator does not take sides and does not make decisions for the parties. Instead, the mediator helps organize the discussion, identify the issues, manage communication, and support practical problem-solving.
Mediation works best when both people are willing to participate, provide relevant information, and consider reasonable compromise. It can be used early in a separation or after some legal advice has already been obtained.
Mediation and Legal Advice
Mediation is not a replacement for independent legal advice. A mediator can help parties discuss possible terms, but each party should understand their legal rights and obligations before signing a final agreement. In many family law matters, independent legal advice is an important step before an agreement is finalized.
When Mediation May Not Be Appropriate
Mediation may not be appropriate where there is family violence, coercive control, serious power imbalance, urgent safety concerns, refusal to disclose financial information, or a pattern of intimidation. In those situations, a different legal process may provide better protection.
