How Child Support Works in Alberta

Child support is the right of the child. In most cases, the starting point is the Federal Child Support Guidelines, which set table amounts based on the paying parent's income and the number of children.

Beyond the table amount, parents may share special or extraordinary expenses — things like child care, health-related costs, and some extracurricular activities — in proportion to their incomes.

Support obligations can change as circumstances change, which is why accurate, up-to-date financial disclosure matters on both sides.
